Corvette ZR1 Hits COTA

A new video showcases the C8 Corvette ZR1's twin-turbo V8 being pushed to its limits at Circuit of the Americas. The ZR1, launched in July 2024, is the first production Corvette with twin turbos, delivering up to 20 psi of boost through its flat-plane crank 5.5L LT7 V8 for serious track credentials.

- The "ZR1" designation dates back to 1970 with the C3 Corvette, where it was a special-purpose engine package designed for racing that included a high-performance engine, heavy-duty transmission, and upgraded suspension. - The LT7 engine's initial horsepower target was 850 hp, but a decade of development resulted in a final output of 1,064 horsepower. This required significant upgrades from the Z06's LT6 engine, including bespoke cylinder head castings and a secondary port fuel injection system. - For context on its track performance at Circuit of the Americas, the production car lap record is 2:10.90, set by the Hennessey Venom F5 Revolution. - While the C8 ZR1 is about 110 pounds heavier than its C7 predecessor, it is significantly more powerful, with an increase of 309 horsepower. - Unlike the C7 ZR1, the C8 version is not available with a manual transmission, coming exclusively with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that has been upgraded to handle the increased power. - A key design feature of the C8 ZR1 is the revival of the split rear window, a nod to the 1963 C2 Corvette. - The optional ZTK performance package provides significant aerodynamic enhancements, including a large rear wing, generating over 1,200 pounds of downforce at top speed for improved stability and cornering.
