Amazon Commits Up to $50B to OpenAI

Amazon is pouring up to $50 billion into OpenAI as part of the AI lab's record $110 billion funding round, which also includes Nvidia and SoftBank. The multi-year deal solidifies Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the core cloud provider for OpenAI's enterprise and defense products, valuing the company at over $730 billion ahead of a potential IPO.

This massive $110 billion funding round is one of the largest private capital raises on record, aimed at meeting the surging computational and R&D costs required to stay ahead in the AI race against competitors like Google and Anthropic. The deal is widely seen as a precursor to OpenAI's highly anticipated IPO, which could happen as early as the second half of this year. Amazon's $50 billion investment will be staggered, with an initial payment of $15 billion, followed by an additional $35 billion subject to certain conditions being met. In return, OpenAI will significantly expand its use of AWS, committing to spend an additional $100 billion on Amazon's cloud infrastructure over the next eight years. The partnership also provides a major endorsement for Amazon's custom AI chips. OpenAI will utilize 2 gigawatts of computing capacity powered by Amazon's Trainium chips to build and train its future models, a move that challenges the market dominance of Nvidia. This isn't Amazon's only major play in the AI space. The company has also invested a total of $8 billion in Anthropic, a key OpenAI rival, making AWS the primary cloud provider for training its models, including Claude. The other major contributors to this funding round are Nvidia and SoftBank, each investing $30 billion. Nvidia's investment secures a crucial role for its hardware in powering OpenAI's expansion, while SoftBank's total investment in the AI lab is set to reach $64.6 billion, giving it an ownership stake of about 13%. OpenAI's valuation has seen a meteoric rise, jumping from $29 billion in early 2023 to $500 billion in October 2025. This latest funding round boosts its pre-money valuation to $730 billion, making it one of the most valuable private companies in the world. Despite this new alliance, OpenAI's foundational partnership with Microsoft remains intact. Microsoft Azure continues to be the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI's core API services and first-party products like ChatGPT, while Microsoft maintains a significant 27% stake in the AI company.
