Fremont Launches Interactive Council Map
The city of Fremont, California, has launched an interactive "storymap" to help residents learn about their city council members. The platform is designed to increase transparency and make it easier for citizens to engage with local government.
The new interactive map builds on Fremont's transition to a district-based election system, a significant shift in its governance. The city moved from at-large to six distinct council districts in 2017, a decision prompted by the California Voting Rights Act to ensure fair representation. This "storymap" serves as a visual guide to this system, allowing residents to easily identify their specific councilmember. Fremont's "Get to Know Your City Council" was the first of what is now a growing collection of Story Maps produced by the city. It was updated following the most recent redistricting process, which concluded in April 2022 and was based on the latest census data. This ensures the district boundaries and representative information remain accurate for residents. The current council is led by Mayor Raj Salwan. The six districts are represented by Teresa Keng (District 1), Desrie Campbell (District 2), Kathy Kimberlin (District 3), Yang Shao (District 4), Yajing Zhang (District 5), and Raymond Liu (District 6). The use of interactive platforms like this is a growing trend among municipalities seeking to enhance civic engagement. Cities like Buena Park have used similar story maps to explain redistricting changes, while Oak Hill, West Virginia, has even transformed its city council agendas into an interactive map format. These tools aim to make complex government information more accessible to the public.
