Cleveland’s Michelin hopefuls
Axios singled out five Cleveland restaurants as potential Michelin contenders now that inspectors are in the city, naming spots such as Cordelia, Zhug and Larder among its picks (axios.com). The list frames local media’s immediate attempt to predict who will receive recognition as Michelin starts its reviews (axios.com).
Cleveland restaurants are suddenly being judged on Michelin’s scale, and local predictions started immediately after inspectors began dining in the city. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin said on April 8 that Cleveland will be part of a new American Great Lakes edition alongside Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. The company said its anonymous inspectors are already “in the field,” and the first full selection will be announced in 2027. (guide.michelin.com) Axios Cleveland followed on April 13 with a list of five Northeast Ohio restaurants it thinks could plausibly win a star. Its published tease names Cordelia, Zhug and Larder among the picks. (axios.com) A Michelin star is the guide’s top restaurant distinction, awarded by inspectors who judge the food rather than décor or service style. Michelin’s official rollout for the Great Lakes region means Cleveland kitchens are now being reviewed under the same system used in Chicago, New York, California and other covered markets. (guide.michelin.com) The Cleveland push is also a tourism play. Destination Cleveland chief executive David Gilbert said the Michelin partnership can attract new visitors and increase restaurant sales, and Crain’s Cleveland Business reported restaurateurs expect more national attention from the guide’s arrival. (guide.michelin.com) (crainscleveland.com) The names surfacing in early speculation already carry national credentials outside Michelin. Cordelia says it was named one of the 22 best new restaurants in the United States, while Zhug says Esquire named it one of America’s best restaurants in 2020. (cordeliacle.com) (zhugcle.com) James Beard recognition overlaps with that speculation, though it is a different award system. In 2025, Cleveland Magazine reported semifinalist nods for Vinnie Cimino of Cordelia, Jeremy Umansky and Allie La Valle of Larder, and Douglas Katz of Zhug, Amba and Kiln. (clevelandmagazine.com) Cordelia’s profile rose again in 2026. Cleveland Magazine and cleveland.com reported that Cimino was a 2026 James Beard semifinalist, with cleveland.com later reporting he advanced to finalist status in Best Chef: Great Lakes. (clevelandmagazine.com) (cleveland.com) (msn.com) Larder has its own national trail. Destination Cleveland describes it as an Eastern European delicatessen and bakery with Jewish deli roots, and recent coverage from The Infatuation pointed to its fermentation-heavy menu and house charcuterie as reasons it stands out. (thisiscleveland.com) (theinfatuation.com) For now, the only official fact is that Cleveland is in Michelin’s territory and inspectors are eating through the city. Everything else — including which dining room gets the first star — is still prediction season. (guide.michelin.com)
