NYC's Irish Pub Renaissance
NYC is having an “Irish Pubaissance” with three new Irish bars and pubs opening just in time for St. Patrick’s Day []. These pubs are offering modern twists on classic pub fare [].
The new establishments arrive as NYC gears up for its 265th St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 17th. Fifth Avenue will transform into a river of green, with 150,000 marchers and 2 million spectators. Robert J. McCann, chair of the Irish Arts Center, will serve as Grand Marshal. These new pubs join a long tradition; the first Irish pubs emerged in the early 19th century as vital social hubs for Irish immigrants. McSorley's Old Ale House, potentially the oldest, claims to have opened in 1854. These pubs offered community, culture, music, and respite from hardship. The "Irish Pubaissance" isn't just about tradition; many are offering modern takes on the classic experience. Tara Mor, near Penn Station, is one such example, offering a modern twist on traditional Irish vibes and aiming to be a go-to spot before and after events at Madison Square Garden. They are also offering live music and events throughout March.
