Amazon Revives Stargate Universe

Amazon has announced a new 'Stargate' show, raising questions about the series' direction and canon continuity. Details remain scarce, but the move showcases Amazon's ongoing investment in revitalizing beloved sci-fi franchises. Fans are speculating whether the reboot will honor previous storylines or chart an entirely new course.

- The new series is made possible by Amazon's $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM, which owns the rights to the Stargate franchise. This deal, finalized in March 2022, gave Amazon control over MGM's catalog of 4,000 movies and 17,000 television episodes. - The previous television franchise ran for 15 years and included *Stargate SG-1* (10 seasons), *Stargate Atlantis* (5 seasons), and *Stargate Universe* (2 seasons), totaling 354 episodes. The last series, *Stargate Universe*, was canceled in 2010 due to declining viewership, ending on a cliffhanger. - Veteran producers from the original franchise are returning for the new show. Brad Wright, co-creator of *SG-1*, *Atlantis*, and *Universe*, and Joseph Mallozzi, a longtime writer and executive producer, will serve as consulting producers. - Martin Gero, who wrote for *Stargate Atlantis* and co-produced *Stargate Universe*, will serve as the showrunner for the new series. The project will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios. - The new show is intended to be a continuation of the existing canon, not a complete reboot of the story. - The original *Stargate* film was created by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich in 1994. They are also attached to the new Amazon project as executive producers. - According to the creative team, the writers' room for the new series is scheduled to begin in early 2026, which could mean a potential premiere in late 2027 or 2028.
