1,300-Year Roman Bridge Flows Again

The Roman Asopos Bridge in ancient Laodikeia, Turkey, has been restored and is carrying water for the first time in 1,300 years. The engineering triumph showcases both Roman construction mastery and modern heritage conservation efforts.

The restoration is being led by Professor Dr. Celal Şimşek of Pamukkale University, who has been heading the systematic excavations at Laodikeia since 2003. The project is a year-round effort, a rarity in Turkish archaeology, thanks to a protocol between the university, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Denizli Municipality. Conservation teams have focused on preserving the bridge's Roman authenticity, employing techniques like structural reinforcement and stone consolidation. The guiding principle is to use original materials where possible and ensure any modern additions are reversible and distinct from the ancient stonework. The Asopos Bridge, constructed in the 1st century AD, is a significant example of Roman engineering, measuring 171 meters long and 7 meters wide with five arches. For 13 centuries, sediment and landscape changes had blocked the natural course of the Asopos River, now known locally as Gümüşçay or Goncalı Deresi. This project is part of a much larger effort to uncover the ancient city of Laodikeia, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. Despite decades of work, only about 1.3% of the vast 5-square-kilometer site has been systematically excavated. Laodikeia was a major hub for trade and was renowned for its textile production and medical school. The city is also one of the Seven Churches of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelation, making the site profoundly important in Christian history. The restoration of the bridge is a key step in a broader vision to reanimate the ancient city, allowing visitors to better understand its function in antiquity. Other major ongoing projects at the site include the excavation of the North (Sacred) Agora and the restoration of the city's two ancient theaters.
