Shilpa Shetty's Monday Yoga Challenge
Bollywood actress and wellness advocate Shilpa Shetty kicked off the week by posting a video of herself performing Vatayansana, a challenging yoga pose. She highlighted its benefits—enhanced concentration, reduced stress, and improved lower body flexibility—and challenged her followers to test their own abilities by holding the pose.
Shetty's dedication to yoga is a long-standing one; she has been a practitioner for over eighteen years, initially turning to the practice to alleviate cervical-related pain. Her public advocacy for yoga began much later, with the release of her first yoga DVD, "Shilpa's Yoga," in 2007. This was followed by the launch of her "Simple Soulful" app in 2019, a venture that took two years of development and research with wellness experts. The app, which now incorporates AI-powered motion tracking to help users with their form, offers over 75 goal-based workout routines and diet plans. The "Monday Motivation" challenge is a regular feature on her social media, where she has over 50 million followers. These posts range from workout videos to messages about mental health and self-care. Vatayanasana, also known as Horse Face Pose, is a challenging balancing asana that requires a great deal of both strength and flexibility. The pose is noted for its ability to improve blood circulation in the lower body, reduce stiffness in the joints, and enhance both focus and concentration. B.K.S. Iyengar, a world-renowned yoga instructor, noted that beginners often find Vatayanasana difficult due to the balance required and potential knee discomfort. He advised that with consistent practice, the pain subsides and balance is achieved. The pose involves several major muscle groups, including the glutes and sartorius muscle, and is beneficial for strengthening the lower half of the body. It is also believed to stimulate the Swadhisthana, or sacral chakra, which is associated with creativity and passion.
