Security incidents and a lawsuit hit OpenAI

A 20‑year‑old has been charged over an attack on Sam Altman’s home and reportedly carried a list of other AI executives, and outlets say Altman’s house was allegedly targeted a second time. A criminal case and a civil lawsuit landed on OpenAI in the same week: prosecutors say a 20-year-old attacked Sam Altman’s home, and a woman says ChatGPT helped her stalker. (justice.gov) (techcrunch.com) Federal prosecutors said Daniel Moreno-Gama, 20, of Spring, Texas, threw a Molotov cocktail at a San Francisco residence linked to Altman on April 10, 2026, then went to OpenAI’s headquarters and threatened to burn that building too. The Department of Justice charged him on April 13 with attempted destruction of property by explosives and possessing an unregistered firearm. (justice.gov) The San Francisco district attorney said Moreno-Gama also faces state charges including attempted murder, alleging he tried to kill Altman and a security guard at the residence. The Associated Press reported his public defender said he has autism and was in an “acute mental health crisis.” (apnews.com 1) (apnews.com 2) The federal complaint says officers found a document laying out anti-artificial-intelligence views and listing other artificial intelligence executives, board members, and investors. The New York Times reported officials said the list included other industry figures beyond Altman. (cnbc.com) (nytimes.com) Two days later, Altman’s San Francisco home was reportedly hit again. Gizmodo, citing the San Francisco Standard and police information, said two people were arrested after a vehicle stopped near the house early Sunday and a shot was allegedly fired. (gizmodo.com) (abcnews.go.com) A separate case in San Francisco Superior Court makes a different claim about harm tied to OpenAI’s chatbot. A woman suing anonymously as Jane Doe alleges her ex-boyfriend used ChatGPT over months to deepen delusions, generate material about her, and escalate stalking and harassment. (techcrunch.com) (bloomberglaw.com) TechCrunch reported the suit says OpenAI received three warnings about the user, including an internal flag tied to “mass-casualty weapons,” but did not cut off his access. Bloomberg Law reported the complaint seeks punitive damages and accuses OpenAI of negligence and product liability. (techcrunch.com) (bloomberglaw.com) OpenAI disputed the lawsuit’s account. TechCrunch reported the company said it had removed the man’s account after learning of the abuse and said it does not want its tools used to harm people. (techcrunch.com) Taken together, the cases put OpenAI on two fronts at once: physical security around its chief executive and legal scrutiny over how its chatbot responds when a user shows signs of dangerous fixation. The criminal case now moves through federal and state court, while the civil suit will test how far courts are willing to hold an artificial intelligence company responsible for a user’s conduct.
