New Asian Supermarket Opens in Fremont
Fremont, California welcomed the largest U.S. location of a popular Asian supermarket chain. This new store aims to significantly expand the city's retail offerings with a diverse selection of Asian groceries and products.
Fremont is a diverse city with a significant Asian population, comprising approximately 63.7% of its residents. This makes it a prime location for Asian supermarkets looking to expand their presence. In 2024, there were approximately 145,000 Asian residents in Fremont. The new H Mart will be located in the Pacific Commons Shopping Center at 43782 Christy St, in a space previously occupied by Kohl's. The store aims to be more than just a grocery store, with plans to include a food hall, dine-in restaurants, a bar, and entertainment options. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026. H Mart, which started as a small corner store in Queens, New York in 1982, has grown to become the largest Asian supermarket chain in the U.S. with over 100 locations across 18 states. This Fremont location represents the largest investment in the company's history and will debut a new multi-level prototype. Other Asian supermarket chains are also expanding in California, including T&T Supermarket and Osaka Marketplace. T&T Supermarket, a Canadian chain, is planning to open its first Southern California location in Irvine. Osaka Marketplace, which debuted in Fremont in 2021, is planning to open two additional locations in Foster City and Pleasant Hill.
