Vail-area trails remain closed

Eagle County has kept several soft-surface routes—North Trail, Buffehr Creek Trail and Son of Middle Creek Trail—closed while officials assess thaw and trail conditions. Several Vail-area dirt trails stayed closed Wednesday as Eagle County and federal managers shifted spring access to trail-by-trail checks instead of a single opening day. (vaildaily.com) Vail Daily reported that North Trail, Buffehr Creek Trail and Son of Middle Creek Trail remained shut while land managers assessed thaw and surface conditions. The same report said some Eagle-area routes were opening this week while others stayed closed. (vaildaily.com) On federal land, the White River National Forest lists annual closures for North Vail Trail, Buffehr Creek Trail and Son of Middle Creek Trail from April 15 through June 20. The order says the restrictions apply every year on those named National Forest System trails. (fs.usda.gov) Eagle County says its seasonal closures are meant to protect winter wildlife habitat and reduce human-wildlife conflicts. The county also says annual closure dates can change with weather conditions and animal behavior. (eaglecounty.us) That flexible timing lines up with spring in the central Rockies, when frozen ground softens during the day and can rut under tires and boots. Vail Valley Mountain Trails Alliance says recreation can trigger a flight response in deer and elk during seasonal closures. (vvmta.org) The closures affect soft-surface routes, not the town’s main paved path network. The Town of Vail says its recreation path system includes more than 15 miles of paved multi-use paths that connect neighborhoods, villages and some trailheads. (vail.gov) In Eagle, some winter wildlife closures ended April 15 on town open space, but the town says violations during closure periods can bring fines of up to $2,650. That means access rules can differ by landowner even within the same valley. (townofeagle.org) For hikers and riders, the practical result is a patchwork spring season: paved routes are largely available, while dirt trails reopen in stages as snowmelt, mud and wildlife conditions allow. Managers told Vail Daily they will keep using freeze-thaw assessments before lifting closures. (vaildaily.com)
