Axel Springer Acquires Bisnow

German media giant Axel Springer has acquired Bisnow, a leading media and events company focused on the commercial real estate industry. Bisnow, which was previously backed by private equity firm The Wicks Group, has built a global audience since its founding in 2005. The acquisition marks a significant consolidation in the B2B media landscape.

The acquisition of Bisnow is a strategic move for Axel Springer, following a major corporate restructuring in September 2024. The German media company spun off its profitable digital classifieds businesses, including StepStone and AVIV, into a separate entity majority-owned by private equity firm KKR. This left Axel Springer as a debt-free, family-owned company with a renewed focus on digital journalism. The deal aligns with CEO Mathias Döpfner's vision to build a global digital news powerhouse, particularly in the English-speaking world. This strategy has been evident in other significant North American acquisitions, including paying over $1 billion for Politico in 2021 and purchasing Business Insider in 2015 for $343 million. For Bisnow, this marks the end of its ownership by private equity firm The Wicks Group, which acquired the commercial real estate media company in May 2016 for an estimated $50 million. At the time of the 2016 sale, Bisnow had around 600,000 e-newsletter subscribers and produced nearly 300 events annually across more than 30 metro markets. Axel Springer's leadership has emphasized a strategic shift away from a business model reliant on maximizing clicks. Instead, the focus is on creating deep, long-term relationships with users and increasing direct audience engagement, a model where Bisnow's niche B2B event and news platform fits well.
