Android 17 & Gemini 'Deep Think' Arrive

Google's next mobile OS, Android 17, is reportedly focused on privacy enhancements, smarter notifications, and seamless IoT integration. It's also getting a "Deep Think" upgrade to its Gemini AI engine, promising more advanced task automation and predictive suggestions across apps.

Google has accelerated its development timeline for Android 17, skipping the traditional developer previews for a continuous "Canary" channel that feeds directly into the beta releases. The first beta for a range of Pixel devices, from the Pixel 6 to the newest models, dropped in February 2026, with a stable public release anticipated around June 2026. Internally, Google continues its tradition of dessert-themed codenames, dubbing Android 17 "Cinnamon Bun". This follows the naming convention of previous versions like Android 16 ("Baklava") and Android 15 ("Vanilla Ice Cream"). Expected user-facing upgrades focus on refinement and customization. Leaks and beta releases point to the introduction of lock screen widgets, an option to force all app icons to adopt themed designs, and a dedicated desktop mode. The "Deep Think" function is a specialized upgrade for the most advanced tier of Google's AI, Gemini 3. It's designed for complex problem-solving in scientific and engineering fields by allowing the AI to explore multiple lines of reasoning simultaneously before delivering a response. Access to Gemini's "Deep Think" capability is not a standard feature for all users but is available to subscribers of the paid Google AI Ultra tier. This positions it as a premium tool for researchers, engineers, and other professionals tackling highly technical challenges. The broader AI integration in Android 17 builds on the trend of on-device processing, utilizing models like Gemini Nano. This approach enhances user privacy and security by keeping sensitive data on the phone rather than sending it to the cloud for analysis. Running AI models directly on the device results in lower latency, providing faster responses for AI-powered features. It also allows key functionalities to work without an active internet connection, improving reliability.
