Microsoft pushes Copilot agents
Microsoft is moving Copilot toward an ‘agentic’ model—exploring always‑on assistants that manage inboxes and calendars and adding role‑specific agents for enterprises. Satya Nadella also announced an AI‑powered track‑changes and contextual comments feature for Word, initially via the Microsoft 365 Copilot Frontier programme on Windows desktop. Microsoft is pushing Copilot beyond chat prompts and toward software that can carry out work inside Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. (techcommunity.microsoft.com) In Microsoft’s March 9, 2026 rollout, Copilot in Outlook gained tools to draft and refine email, manage calendars and responses to meeting invitations, and take actions directly from chat. Microsoft also said Copilot can find open meeting times, send invites, and keep calendars updated based on custom instructions. (techcommunity.microsoft.com) For Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Microsoft said Copilot now takes “multi-step, app-native actions” inside the apps rather than only answering one-off questions. On April 15, Satya Nadella also announced new Word features including word-level track changes, contextual comments, and table-of-contents management in Microsoft 365 Copilot. (techcommunity.microsoft.com) (moneycontrol.com) Those Word additions are aimed at document-heavy jobs such as legal, finance, and policy review, where teams need visible edits, comment threads tied to specific text, and preserved formatting. Moneycontrol reported the features are initially available through the Microsoft 365 Copilot Frontier program on Windows desktop. (moneycontrol.com) Microsoft has been laying the groundwork for this shift for months. Its documentation says Copilot agents can retrieve information, summarize data, send emails, update records, and connect Microsoft 365 to third-party systems such as Salesforce and Dynamics. (learn.microsoft.com) The company’s pitch rests on “Work IQ,” the internal layer Microsoft says connects documents, meetings, email, chat, and other business data so Copilot has more context about a user’s work. Microsoft described Work IQ in March as the system that helps Copilot and its agents stay grounded in current files, relationships, and work patterns. (techcommunity.microsoft.com) Microsoft is also using the Frontier program as an early-access lane for these features before broader release. Microsoft said in an earlier Frontier announcement that the program rolls out new Copilot capabilities in phases so customers can test them and send feedback before general availability. (techcommunity.microsoft.com) The timing is part of a wider product reset inside Microsoft 365 Copilot. In a March 23 recap, Microsoft said its latest wave of updates across Copilot Chat, Outlook, and agents was built to help users move “from intent to action” and scale artificial intelligence across organizations. (techcommunity.microsoft.com) Microsoft’s near-term test is whether customers trust Copilot to do more than draft text. The company is now asking workers to let Copilot schedule meetings, revise contracts, and manage comment-heavy documents without leaving the apps where that work already happens.
