Mantle Deploys ERC-8004 Identity Standard
Mantle, a liquidity layer for real-world assets, announced the deployment of the ERC-8004 standard on its mainnet. The new Ethereum standard is designed to introduce a specialized trust and identity layer. The company stated the milestone aims to transform AI applications within its ecosystem.
- The ERC-8004 standard, titled "Trustless Agents," establishes three core on-chain registries: an Identity Registry, a Reputation Registry, and a Validation Registry. These components work together to allow autonomous AI agents to discover, interact, and build trust with each other without centralized intermediaries. - An agent's identity is represented by an ERC-721 token (an NFT), whose metadata points to a JSON file, typically stored on IPFS or served via HTTPS. This file contains details like the agent's name, capabilities, and service endpoints. - The standard was co-authored by representatives from prominent organizations in the web and crypto space, including MetaMask, the Ethereum Foundation, Google, and Coinbase. - Unlike asset standards such as ERC-20 (fungible tokens) or ERC-721 (NFTs), ERC-8004 is an infrastructure standard focused on providing a shared trust and discovery layer for machine-to-machine interaction. - By design, the standard leaves application logic and payment mechanisms out of scope, allowing it to serve as a flexible base layer that can be integrated with various agent frameworks and business models. - Developers can use the standard on Mantle to build applications like financial agents with verifiable on-chain performance histories or services that connect traditional finance with decentralized finance marketplaces. - The standard extends existing agent-to-agent communication frameworks by adding a blockchain-based reputation and validation layer, which is crucial for high-value or high-risk automated tasks. - Mantle is an Ethereum Layer 2 network with a treasury of over $4 billion, which it uses to fund the development of its ecosystem, including initiatives in decentralized AI and finance.
