Amazon Bets €33.7B on Spain
Amazon has announced its largest-ever technology investment in Spain, pledging €33.7 billion over the next decade. The massive spend will expand data center infrastructure to drive AI innovation and build new supply chain facilities in Aragón. The move reflects the global race to own both the digital and physical infrastructure for next-gen retail and logistics.
This massive €33.7 billion investment significantly expands upon a previously announced €15.7 billion plan, demonstrating a long-term commitment to Spain as a key digital hub for Southern Europe. The project is expected to contribute an estimated €31.7 billion to Spain's GDP by 2035 and support an average of 29,900 full-time jobs annually in local businesses. The core of the investment will expand the AWS Europe (Spain) Region in Aragón, adding new data centers in Huesca and Teruel to the existing facilities in Zaragoza. This expansion is not just about capacity; it's a strategic move to deliver advanced AI and cloud computing capabilities to organizations across Europe. The new infrastructure will support everything from generative AI development to powering public sector services. Beyond the data centers, Amazon is building a dedicated supply chain to support them within Aragón. This includes a server manufacturing plant, a manufacturing fulfillment warehouse, and a specialized facility for producing and repairing AI and machine learning servers. These facilities are projected to create approximately 1,800 direct jobs. This investment places Amazon in direct competition with other tech giants beefing up their European cloud infrastructure. Microsoft recently announced a $2.1 billion investment in its own Spanish data centers in Madrid and Aragón. The race to provide cloud and AI services is intensifying, with Spain emerging as a critical battleground. The government of Aragón and Spanish national officials have lauded the investment as a transformative project. They highlight Aragón's ample land, access to sustainable energy, and growing local talent pool as key reasons for attracting such a massive commitment. The AWS data centers in the region have been powered by 100% renewable energy since their launch in 2022. As part of the deal, Amazon has committed to investing €30 million in community programs across Spain through 2035, focusing on education, sustainability, and social impact. This includes initiatives to train students and the workforce in AI and digital skills, aiming to equip the local population for the high-skilled jobs being created.
