Greece Unveils New Security Plan for Crete

Greece's Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, has announced a new security plan for the island of Crete. The initiative specifically targets vendetta-related violence, arms trafficking, and organized crime to improve safety for residents.

The new security plan includes the permanent deployment of a "Greek FBI" style organized crime unit to Crete. This elite division will be tasked with dismantling criminal networks and addressing the island's endemic violence. The initiative will also add 122 officers to reinforce the police presence on the island. This move follows recent deadly violence, including a shooting in the village of Vorizia that killed two people and injured at least six, stemming from a family feud. Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis stated, "The glass is overflowing … no more bullies and local mafias in Crete." Vendettas, or "blood feuds," are a deeply rooted tradition in Crete, with some conflicts between families lasting for decades and resulting in numerous deaths. These disputes often arise from issues of honor or disputes over property and grazing land. One of the largest recorded vendettas started in 1941 and led to the deaths of 140 men from two families over 15 years. The plan also targets a significant arms trafficking problem, with hundreds of thousands of illicit weapons believed to be in Greece, many stolen from Albanian military caches. Gun ownership carries a cultural status in parts of Crete, which contributes to the market for illegal firearms. New legislation will introduce stricter penalties for illegal gun possession and even for firing shots at celebrations. The crackdown addresses organized crime networks involved in drug trafficking, extortion, and money laundering. A recent major police operation led to 48 arrests, including army and police officers, dismantling a ring implicated in a bombing attack on a police officer's home. Investigations revealed the group handled millions in illicit profits.
