Sydney Beach Tops Australia Rankings

A Sydney stretch has been named Australia's best beach for 2026 in the annual ranking that evaluates beaches for beauty, accessibility, environmental quality, and visitor experience. The top spot was awarded for pristine sand, clear water, and vibrant local culture.

The winning stretch is not a single location but Bate Bay in Sydney's Sutherland Shire, a 4.8-kilometer sweep of nine distinct beaches. This collection includes well-known spots like Cronulla and Elouera, four ocean pools, and the calm waters of Gunnamatta Bay. The annual list is curated by Tourism Australia's Beach Ambassador, Brad Farmer AM, a conservationist who has been advocating for coastal environments since he was 12. He assesses over 12,500 beaches against a rigorous 130-point scale covering factors like natural integrity, safety, access, and community vibe. This is the second consecutive year the top honor has gone to a cluster of beaches rather than a single strip of sand. In 2025, the winner was the Bay of Fires, a 10-kilometer stretch of coastline in Tasmania. The 2026 runner-up was Pinky Beach on Rottnest Island in Western Australia, praised for its calm, clear water perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Other top contenders included Beachcomber Cove in Queensland and another NSW spot, Tallow Beach, near Byron Bay. A key factor in Bate Bay's win is its accessibility; it is the only Sydney ocean beachfront that can be reached directly by train from the city's CBD. The top ten list for 2026 showcases a wide variety of Australian coastal experiences. It includes remote spots like Hellfire Bay in WA, the unique inland waterhole of Ellery Creek Big Hole in the Northern Territory, and Godfreys Beach at the foot of The Nut in Tasmania.
