Pentagon Bans Anthropic, Taps OpenAI

The Trump administration has ordered all military and federal agencies to cease business with AI startup Anthropic, citing security and supply chain risks. Just hours later, the Pentagon struck a deal with OpenAI, positioning it as the preferred AI partner for the U.S. government. The move is a major blow to Anthropic and solidifies OpenAI's dominance in both the commercial and public sectors.

The dispute centered on Anthropic's refusal to remove safeguards preventing its AI, Claude, from being used for mass domestic surveillance or in fully autonomous weapons systems without human oversight. The company stated it could not "in good conscience" agree to the Pentagon's demand for "any lawful use" of its technology, arguing current AI is not reliable enough for such applications. In an unprecedented move against a U.S. tech firm, the Department of Defense designated Anthropic a "supply-chain risk," a label typically reserved for foreign adversaries like China's Huawei. This designation effectively blacklists Anthropic from doing business with the U.S. military or any of its contractors. The company has announced it will challenge the designation in court. The ban jeopardizes a contract worth up to $200 million that Anthropic was awarded alongside OpenAI, Google, and xAI for AI development. President Trump ordered all federal agencies to phase out Anthropic's technology over a six-month period. This action could also impact companies like Palantir, which integrates Anthropic's models into its battlefield management systems. Hours after the ban, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a deal to deploy OpenAI's models on the Pentagon's classified networks. Altman stated their agreement includes "technical safeguards" and prohibitions on mass domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons, similar to the principles Anthropic advocated for.
