Nanji Village Artist Transformation

China's Nanji Village transformed from fishing outpost to artist tribes in coral houses with tidal flats and salt cafes, offering the perfect blend of cultural exploration and natural landscapes. Other highlighted destinations include Bali outdoor living and Rome/Tuscany Vinci for travelers seeking both urban culture and adventure.

Nanji Village, located in Jiaowei Township, Xuwen County, is at the southernmost tip of the Chinese mainland in Guangdong Province. For years it was a remote and little-visited fishing outpost, but it has been revitalized by a wave of former urban professionals, including designers and advertisers. A key figure in this transformation is Lian Jun, the operator of the "Artists Tribe" and a pioneer in the village's homestay movement. Over the last ten years, he has focused on renovating abandoned coral houses, using local materials such as bougainvillea and shells to create unique accommodations. These revitalized coral houses are more than just a place to stay; they've become cultural hubs. Jun's project hosts events like poetry sessions and art exhibitions, injecting a new artistic energy into the once-remote village. Another innovator, Tan Wenzheng, returned from Guangzhou to open a homestay café with a creative twist. His menu uniquely incorporates Xuwen's aged salt into drinks, and he also designs cultural products that showcase the distinct charm of Nanji Village. The transformation extends beyond the buildings. Local homestay operator Lin Guorun offers immersive experiences for visitors. He guides guests across the tidal flats during low tide, sharing local stories and showcasing the area's natural products, preserving the fishing village's heritage.
