Mount Marcy Hiker Dies

A 21-year-old hiker from New Jersey died after slipping off the trail near the summit of Mount Marcy, New York's highest peak, succumbing to cold exposure. Other recent rescues include a Connecticut Boy Scout with an allergic reaction on Mount Washington and a woman and teen airlifted after a fall in Olympic National Park.

- The hiker on Mount Marcy died on Thursday, February 12, 2026, after calling 911 at 3:05 p.m. to report she had slipped off the trail and could not get back up. - Rescue efforts were hampered by heavy cloud cover which prevented a State Police helicopter from locating the 21-year-old near the summit. - A forest ranger dispatched to the ground found the woman deceased at 9:51 p.m.; a relative reported on social media that she succumbed to hypothermia in deep snow and below-zero windchill. - The woman's dog was found alive and escorted safely down the mountain by rangers, while the hiker's body was recovered by helicopter the following morning. - This was one of several recent fatalities in the Adirondacks; a 52-year-old skier died after hitting a tree at Whiteface Mountain on January 24, and another skier died there on February 4. - The Boy Scout on Mount Washington, a 15-year-old from Connecticut, was rescued on Sunday, February 15, via a State Parks Snow Cat after having a significant allergic reaction near the summit buildings. - The rescue in Olympic National Park on February 15 involved a 51-year-old woman and a teenager who were airlifted by the U.S. Coast Guard from Mount Ellinor after the woman fell in an avalanche chute.
