Singapore's Viral Peranakan Stall
Singapore's Mandai Wildlife Reserve welcomes viral Peranakan food stall Nya Nya to its food court lineup, offering visitors a taste of this distinctive regional cuisine. Only one of the hunky brothers from the viral stall will be working at the new location.
The stall, Nya Nya, is a modern spin-off of Nonya Delicatessen, a Peranakan food kiosk started by the brothers' grandmother, Lilian Tan, at Bukit Timah Plaza in 1980. The family's culinary roots are from Melaka, and the name "Nya Nya" is a Peranakan term for mother. The original Wisma Atria outlet, which often has long lines, is run by brothers Daryl Lim, 27, and Damian Lim, 21. Their popularity skyrocketed after they were featured by local food website 8days.sg, with customers drawn to both the food and the "hunky" siblings. The new, smaller Mandai outlet will be run solely by the younger brother, Damian, a recent real estate graduate from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. He will manage the stall until he enlists in National Service, with his older brother Daniel, 23, occasionally covering for him. Due to the stall's modest size, the menu at the Mandai Wildlife Reserve will be limited. It will feature only one savory dish, Nonya Laksa, priced at S$8.90, which is higher than the S$6.90 price at the Wisma Atria location. Desserts like Sago Gula Melaka and assorted kueh will also be available.
