Ukraine Strikes Russian Air Defenses
Ukraine claims to have destroyed 19 Russian air defense systems in 12 days, including advanced S-300V and Tor systems. These drone strikes are degrading Russian capabilities in occupied territories. Meanwhile, Kyiv has intensified attacks on Russian energy assets ahead of a Zelensky-Macron summit in Paris.
These strikes are part of a broader Ukrainian effort to degrade Russian air defense and radar capabilities, particularly in occupied Crimea. Recent targets include advanced radar systems like the 48Ya6-K1 Podlet, Kasta-2E2, and Sopka-2, which are crucial for detecting incoming threats, including low-flying drones and cruise missiles. The "Prymary" unit of Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) has claimed responsibility, releasing drone footage of the attacks. Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces have also reported striking Pantsir, Tor, Buk, and S-300V systems in occupied Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts. These attacks utilize Ukrainian FP-2 strike drones with warheads ranging from 60 to 100 kilograms. The destruction of these systems aims to disrupt Russia's long-, medium-, and short-range air defense capabilities. Concurrently, Ukraine has intensified attacks on Russian energy assets, potentially impacting Russian oil revenue. A recent drone attack on a compressor station serving a natural gas pipeline to Turkey was called an "absolutely reckless action" by the Kremlin. Despite these attacks, Russia continues to launch aerial assaults on Ukraine, with a recent attack involving 94 drones, 77 of which were shot down by Ukrainian air defenses. Zelensky's upcoming summit with Macron in Paris will likely focus on bolstering Ukraine's defenses and countering Russia's "shadow fleet" used to circumvent sanctions. Zelensky has stressed the need to deprive Russia of its air supremacy and its ability to finance the war. He is also seeking White House approval for a U.S. drone production deal to counter Iranian-designed Shahed drones.
