Bay Area Protests Disrupt Travel

Demonstrations erupted across the Bay Area following an intensification of the war in Iran. The protests have caused significant travel chaos. The events prompted the U.S. to urge evacuations in 14 countries in the Middle East.

Protests in San Francisco and San Jose were organized by a coalition of grassroots groups, including the ANSWER Coalition and the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Demonstrators gathered at locations like San Francisco's Embarcadero Plaza and outside the Federal Building, calling for an end to U.S. and Israeli intervention in Iran and chanting slogans such as "No boots on the ground, no bombs in the air." The demonstrations followed a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation on February 28 that targeted Iran's military and nuclear infrastructure and resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This escalation has led to retaliatory missile and drone strikes from Iran against Israel and U.S. allies in the region, prompting the U.S. State Department to issue an urgent advisory for American citizens to evacuate 14 Middle Eastern countries. The Bay Area's Iranian-American community has shown a range of reactions to the conflict. While some participated in anti-war protests, others held celebratory rallies, expressing hope that the death of the Supreme Leader could lead to the end of the current regime. One San Francisco restaurant owner, an immigrant from Iran, expressed happiness, stating he had been waiting 47 years for this day. The conflict is expected to have a direct economic impact on the Bay Area, with analysts predicting a sharp increase in gas prices. The region's reliance on crude oil shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, now a conflict zone, could drive prices into the $7-plus range. This adds pressure on small businesses already dealing with higher operating costs. For the tech and venture capital sectors, the war introduces a new layer of uncertainty. While some investors see a significant opportunity in defense technology, with investments in autonomous systems surging, others are adopting a "wait and see" approach. There is a growing concern that a prolonged conflict could dissuade venture capital funds from committing new money to startups in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The geopolitical instability is also elevating cybersecurity concerns for Silicon Valley. Experts warn that Iran could utilize hacktivist groups to launch cyberattacks against U.S. infrastructure, with financial companies and the R&D of tech firms being potential targets. A nationwide day of action is planned for Saturday, March 7th, with protests scheduled in cities across the country, including Fresno and Los Angeles, to oppose the war. The ANSWER Coalition is one of the key organizers of these planned demonstrations. Local political leaders, including Governor Gavin Newsom, have denounced the military strikes as an "illegal, dangerous war" initiated without congressional authorization. At the same time, Newsom also stated that "The corrupt and repressive Iranian regime must never have nuclear weapons" and "The leadership of Iran must go."
