GHIC expiries and new FCDO flags

More than 1.2 million UK Global Health Insurance Cards are due to expire in 2026, so cards many travellers rely on for reciprocal emergency care in Europe will need checking or renewal before summer departures. (sustainhealth.fit) The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has also updated advice for Turkey, Cyprus and Greece and published specific “no‑go” zones as the security picture in the Eastern Mediterranean shifts. More than 1.2 million United Kingdom Global Health Insurance Cards are due to expire in 2026, while the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has refreshed travel warnings for Turkey, Cyprus and Greece ahead of the summer season. (nhs.uk) (sustainhealth.fit) (gov.uk) A United Kingdom Global Health Insurance Card gives United Kingdom residents access to necessary state healthcare in the European Economic Area on the same basis as a local resident, and the National Health Service says the card is free and lasts up to five years. Cardholders can renew up to nine months before expiry. (nhs.uk) (faq.nhsbsa.nhs.uk) The National Health Service also says the card is not a substitute for travel insurance, because it may not cover all health costs and never covers repatriation. If a traveller needs emergency treatment before a replacement card arrives, the National Health Service Business Services Authority can issue a Provisional Replacement Certificate at the point treatment is needed. (nhs.uk) (overseas-healthcare.nhsbsa.nhs.uk) The expiry wave is concentrated around the busiest holiday period. Sustain Health reported, citing a Freedom of Information response obtained by comparison site PayingTooMuch from the National Health Service Business Services Authority, that nearly 800,000 cards are due to lapse between July and September 2026. (sustainhealth.fit) On the security side, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office says its Turkey advice was updated on March 1, 2026, and still warns against all travel within 10 kilometres of the Syria border because of fighting and a heightened risk of terrorism. The same page says regional escalation has created security risks and travel disruption. (gov.uk) For Cyprus, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office updated advice on March 5, 2026, adding that terrorist attacks “cannot be ruled out.” It also flagged a suspected drone impact at Royal Air Force Akrotiri on March 2 and said regional escalation has led to travel disruption. (gov.uk 1) (gov.uk 2) For Greece, the latest Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office update on April 10, 2026, was an entry-rules change tied to the European Entry-Exit System, but the safety page still says terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks and warns of regular strikes and protests that can disrupt ferries, trains, buses and flights. Greek authorities have also increased security at some prominent locations, including tourist sites. (gov.uk 1) (gov.uk 2) The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is not telling Britons to avoid Turkey, Cyprus or Greece altogether. It is telling them to read the country pages closely, avoid the specific areas or protests listed there, and understand that travel insurance can be invalidated if they go against official advice. (gov.uk 1) (gov.uk 2) (gov.uk 3) That leaves travellers with two checks before departure: look at the expiry date on the health card in your wallet, and look at the live Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office page for the country on your booking. Both can change before a summer flight does. (nhs.uk) (gov.uk)
