Bern's Steak House to Replace Haven With Seafood Concept

Bern's Steak House in Tampa plans to replace its adjacent bar and restaurant, Haven, with a new seafood concept slated to open in 2027. The move will change the culinary focus at the prominent Howard Avenue location. Further details on the new restaurant's name and menu have not yet been released.

- The location of the new seafood restaurant has a history of evolution; it first opened in 1996 as SideBern's, the "New American little sister" to Bern's Steak House. In 2015, it was renovated and rebranded as Haven, with a more casual, wine-bar atmosphere. - The name "Haven" was a tribute to the original "Beer Haven" bar that Bern and Gert Laxer purchased in 1956, which eventually became Bern's Steak House. - The new seafood concept will be led by Executive Chef Chad Johnson, a two-time James Beard Award Best Chef: South Semi-finalist who has been at the helm of Haven. - Haven was known for its extensive beverage program, including 300 bourbons, over 40 wines by the glass, and a 2,500-bottle wine collection, as well as a "cheese cave" with over 100 varieties of cheese. - The parent company, owned by David Laxer, son of founders Bern and Gert Laxer, has expanded its hospitality ventures to include Bern's Fine Wines & Spirits and the Epicurean Hotel. - Bern's Steak House, founded in 1956, is an iconic Tampa institution famous for its aged steaks, one of the world's largest wine collections with over half a million bottles, and the internationally renowned Harry Waugh Dessert Room. - The decision to replace Haven comes after it celebrated its 10th anniversary in March 2025 with a special dinner. Haven will remain open until the summer of 2026, and its employees will be supported through the transition to the new concept.
