Tesla's Optimus Gen 3 Debuts in Shanghai

Tesla's Optimus Gen 3 debuted at AWE 2026 in Shanghai, showing improved dexterity and learning, with consumer sales targeted for late 2027.

Optimus Gen 3 boasts significantly improved hand dexterity, featuring 22 degrees of freedom compared to Gen 2's 11. Elon Musk showcased this advancement, highlighting the robot's enhanced ability to handle real-world tasks. The robot's "Watch and Learn" capability marks a shift from traditional coding-based programming to a system where Optimus learns by observing and mimicking human actions. This end-to-end imitation learning allows it to adapt to unpredictable real-world scenarios, moving beyond simple instruction following. Tesla is building a massive AI training data center called Cortex 2.0 at Giga Texas to accelerate Optimus' learning. This facility will expose Optimus to a vast range of human motions and real-world situations through video analysis, enabling it to develop general physical intelligence. The Optimus Gen 3 is designed to navigate and interact in human environments, using onboard perception and control systems. It can recognize objects, people, and hazards using multi-camera vision.
