Smorgasburg to Open Seafood Hall on Governors Island
Smorgasburg is launching a 32,000-square-foot seafood hall named "Six Coasts" on Governors Island. The expansive new food venue will feature a variety of seafood from different culinary regions.
- The new seafood hall, opening in May 2026, is named "Six Coasts" to represent the culinary diversity of six coastal regions across the Americas, including Nova Scotia, the Caribbean, and Baja. - "Six Coasts" will occupy the waterfront space formerly held by Island Oyster, located next to Soissons Landing, the primary ferry terminal from Manhattan. - In addition to food, the venue plans to host a variety of cultural events for all ages, such as visiting chef residencies, film nights, DJ series, and live music. - The project is a collaboration with The Trust for Governors Island, which selected Smorgasburg to operate the space following a request for proposals issued in February 2025 as part of the island's ongoing redevelopment. - The venue will feature a 100-seat outdoor bar and will operate as a fully electric restaurant, in line with Governors Island's sustainability goals. - This marks a significant expansion for Smorgasburg, which started as a weekly open-air food market in Williamsburg in 2011 and now has locations in Los Angeles and Miami. - The establishment is part of a broader effort to transform the 172-acre island into a year-round destination with diverse amenities, joining other tenants like the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
