Mixt to Open New San Mateo Location
Fast-casual restaurant chain Mixt will open a new location in San Mateo on March 3. The company announced that the grand opening will be followed by a week of festivities to celebrate the new restaurant. This marks another expansion for the salad-focused chain in the Bay Area.
- The company was founded in San Francisco in 2005 by co-founder and CEO Leslie Silverglide, who holds a master's degree in biodiversity and conservation from Stanford. The concept was to create a restaurant focused on sustainability and healthy food before "going green" was a mainstream concept. - Mixt is a certified B Corp, a designation that requires meeting high standards of social and environmental performance and transparency. The company reports sourcing over 2 million pounds of locally-sourced, sustainable, and organic vegetables annually and was among the first to use 100% compostable packaging. - The new San Mateo restaurant is the company's 20th location and is part of its 20-year anniversary celebration. Mixt has expanded from its San Francisco origins to include locations across the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Texas. - The restaurant is located at 301 S B St., taking over a storefront that was formerly home to the independent B Street Books, which relocated to Burlingame in 2025. - Grand opening festivities include collaborations with other local businesses, such as a free mini cupcake from Sibby's Cupcakery with a purchase on March 4 and a free class offering from Orangetheory on March 3. - In 2009, the founders sold the company to an international private equity firm backed by Nestlé, only to re-acquire it in 2012 with plans for national expansion. The company officially rebranded from 'Mixt Greens' to 'MIXT' in 2016.
