Rome's Trevi System Welcomes 230K Visitors

Rome's mayor is celebrating the success of the new Trevi Fountain entry system, which welcomed 230,000 visitors in its first month. The system was designed to manage crowds and preserve the iconic site's allure while making visits smoother and more enjoyable. For travelers, this means potentially shorter lines and better views of the historic landmark.

The new system, which began on February 2, 2026, requires non-resident tourists to pay a €2 fee to access the fountain's lower basin. In its first month, the initiative generated over €435,000 from nearly 218,000 paying visitors. The funds are designated for the upkeep of the monument and will also be used to grant Rome residents free admission to the city's municipal museums. This measure is a direct response to years of "chaos, decay, and insecurity" fueled by overtourism, according to city officials. The sheer volume of people in the small piazza has led to conflicts, with a notable brawl breaking out between tourists in 2018 over a photo opportunity. The site has also been a target for pickpockets who prey on distracted visitors. Preservation of the 18th-century landmark is a primary concern. The fountain has suffered from degradation and damage, including incidents of tourists climbing and jumping into the water, imitating a famous scene from the film *La Dolce Vita*. Activists have also used the monument for protests, twice dumping red dye into its waters. Before implementing the fee, the city had already taken steps to manage the crowds, including a restoration in late 2024 and the installation of a queuing system that limits the number of people near the fountain to 400 at a time. The new ticketing process follows a similar model introduced at the Pantheon and is part of a broader trend in Italy to manage tourist flows, as seen with Venice's day-tripper tax.
