Ethereum ENS launches 'on.eth' identities

Ethereum Name Service (ENS) just launched 'on.eth' as a shared source of truth for chain identities [https://x.com/ensdomains/status/2031754862531367231]. This move got 280 likes, 72 reposts, and 56K views. How will 'on.eth' simplify cross-chain transactions?

The 'on.eth' launch introduces a canonical on-chain registry, granting each chain a resolvable identity within the ENS namespace. Subdomains like 'base.on.eth' will resolve verifiable metadata, including chain IDs and interoperable addresses. This replaces the existing off-chain mappings maintained by wallets and apps. This new system leverages ERC-7828, Wonderland's Interop SDK, and ERC-7930 addresses to create human-readable cross-chain names in the format "domain.eth@chain". Ethereum apps and wallets can visit interop address.com to learn more about supporting chain-aware addressing. The ENS DAO will retain ownership of the namespace, while chain operators manage their own records. ENS simplifies transactions by allowing users to verify recipient names instead of comparing long hexadecimal strings. It supports multi-chain address resolution through standardized text records, enabling a single ENS name to resolve to different addresses across multiple chains like Bitcoin and Litecoin. This eliminates the need to share separate addresses for different cryptocurrencies.
