Author John Scalzi on Building a Resilient Sci-Fi Career

In a recent interview, Hugo Award-winning author John Scalzi discussed his strategies for building a long-term career in science fiction. He credited his success to a willingness to pivot with industry changes and a focus on community building with readers and fellow authors through online engagement.

John Scalzi's career began online, where he has maintained his blog, "Whatever," since 1998. This early digital presence, which now attracts 40,000 daily readers, allowed him to build a dedicated fanbase even before his first novel was traditionally published. His debut novel, "Old Man's War," was initially serialized on his website in 2002 before being acquired by Tor Books and published in 2005. His work often blends humor with traditional science fiction concepts, such as in his 2012 novel "Redshirts," which won a Hugo Award for its satirical take on Star Trek tropes. Scalzi's influence extends beyond his own writing; he served as the president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America from 2010 to 2013, advocating for authors' rights within the industry. Scalzi has navigated the changing publishing landscape by securing major, long-term contracts. In 2015, he signed a 10-year, 13-book deal with Tor Books for a reported $3.4 million. More recently, in 2024, he signed another seven-figure deal for 10 more books with the same publisher. Beyond his blog, Scalzi actively engages with the science fiction community and discusses the craft of writing. He has been a creative consultant for the television series *Stargate Universe* and has had several of his own stories adapted for the Netflix series *Love, Death + Robots*.
