TECNO to Unveil AI-Focused Phones at MWC
Smartphone brand TECNO is set to unveil its new flagship CAMON 50 smartphone series at MWC 2026 in Barcelona. The launch will highlight a suite of AI-driven imaging features and a broader AI product ecosystem.
TECNO's focus on camera technology in its CAMON series is a long-term strategy, not a recent pivot. The lineup began in 2015 with the CAMON C5 and C8, which were among the first to prioritize low-light performance in the African market, a stark contrast to the grainy images common on budget smartphones at the time. This camera-centric approach has been consistent, with each new model introducing significant imaging upgrades. The brand's parent company, Transsion, has established a dominant position in emerging markets. For the full year of 2025, Transsion (which includes TECNO, Infinix, and itel) held a commanding 48% market share in Africa's smartphone market, shipping over 40.5 million units. This deep-rooted presence was built by tailoring devices to local needs, such as offering dual-SIM functionality and developing camera software optimized for darker skin tones. The upcoming CAMON 50 series represents the next step in TECNO's "Practical AI" strategy. This initiative focuses on tangible user benefits rather than just processing power. Beyond photography, TECNO's AI ecosystem includes the Ella assistant and features aimed at productivity, such as real-time translation and smart device integration, all developed with a focus on emerging market use cases. This year's MWC event will also see the official launch of a strategic partnership with Tonino Lamborghini. This collaboration extends beyond just phones, featuring co-created high-performance devices like a gaming mini-PC and a limited-edition POVA smartphone. Such partnerships are a growing trend, allowing tech companies to tap into the luxury market and fashion houses to engage with a tech-savvy audience. The push into AI-driven features is a key differentiator in a competitive landscape. In TECNO's key markets, it faces strong competition from Samsung's Galaxy A-series and Xiaomi's Redmi series. By developing its own AI imaging "brain," the TECNO Image Matrix (TIM), the company aims to offer unique capabilities like enhanced motion capture and more accurate skin tone restoration. However, the broader smartphone market faces headwinds in 2026. Analysts predict a global market decline of up to 13% due to a persistent memory chip shortage, which is expected to drive up component costs and average selling prices. This could particularly impact the entry-level and mid-range segments, which are crucial in TECNO's primary markets.
