New Tapas Spot Hits East Village

A new small-plates and tapas restaurant, Much Obliged, is set to open soon at 42 Avenue B in New York's East Village. The spot, from seasoned NYC hospitality professionals, has a full liquor license and aims to become a destination for social dining.

The husband-and-wife team behind Much Obliged, Marcos Fernandez and Allyx Seemann, are not new to the New York restaurant scene. They are also the owners of Gator, a restaurant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, known for its sustainable approach to contemporary American food. Seemann has a personal connection to the neighborhood, having lived in the East Village for many years during her 20s. She described the decision to open a new establishment there as feeling like "coming home," citing the area's unique blend of nightlife, community, and artistry as a major draw. The 42 Avenue B location was previously home to Pig & Butter, a brunch-focused restaurant. Much Obliged will shift the focus to evening service with a menu centered on small plates. Initial offerings mentioned include yellowfin crudo, grilled halloumi with chimichurri, gnocchi, calamari salad, and a hake fillet sandwich. The intimate space is designed for a leisurely dining experience, with plans for six tables and a stand-up bar, accommodating a total of 27 patrons. The team aims to create an atmosphere where guests can "sit and slow down," whether for a full meal or just a snack. Much Obliged joins a diverse and competitive dining landscape in the East Village. The neighborhood is known for its rich culinary history, from the Ukrainian restaurants of "Little Ukraine" to the Indian and Bangladeshi eateries on "Curry Row." It will also share the area with other established tapas-style restaurants like Nai, Yuca, and Plado Tasting Bar.
