OpenAI has been pruning ChatGPT’s model picker for months, removing older names from the consumer app while keeping those same models available through its developer application programming interface, or API. (help.openai.com) OpenAI’s help center says GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, o4-mini, and GPT-5 “Instant” and “Thinking” left ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. A second wave followed on March 11, when GPT-5.1 Instant, GPT-5.1 Thinking, and GPT-5.1 Pro were retired from ChatGPT as well. (help.openai.com) The company did not shut those models off for developers. OpenAI’s release notes say the retired models “will continue to be available through the OpenAI API,” and said it would give advance notice before any future API retirements. (help.openai.com) In plain terms, ChatGPT is the storefront and the API is the back room. OpenAI is simplifying what everyday users see, while preserving older model access for companies and builders that have already wired those systems into products and workflows. (help.openai.com) The replacement inside ChatGPT is a smaller set of GPT-5 options. OpenAI says GPT-5.3 Instant is now the default for logged-in users, while GPT-5.4 Thinking and GPT-5.4 Pro handle harder tasks and longer-running work. (help.openai.com) OpenAI also changed what happens to older chats and custom bots. Its support page says conversations and projects using retired models are defaulted to GPT-5.3 Instant or GPT-5.4 equivalents, and GPTs built on retired models are automatically moved to the closest newer option. (help.openai.com) Some carveouts lasted longer for business customers. OpenAI said ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu customers could keep using GPT-4o inside Custom GPTs until April 3, 2026, after which GPT-4o would be fully retired across all ChatGPT plans. (help.openai.com) The cleanup comes as OpenAI is reshaping other parts of the company. The Indian Express reported on April 20 that Kevin Weil, Bill Peebles, and Srinivas Narayanan were leaving as OpenAI pulled back from “side quests” including Sora and OpenAI for Science and pushed harder toward enterprise artificial intelligence products. (indianexpress.com) Reliability has also stayed in view on April 20. OpenAI’s status page said it was “currently experiencing issues” affecting ChatGPT Business seat upgrades, while the company’s incident feed shows a recent run of resolved problems including login failures, empty ChatGPT web responses, and a downed Responses API endpoint. (status.openai.com (status.openai.com) The result is a cleaner ChatGPT menu paired with a messier transition underneath. OpenAI is narrowing the consumer experience to a few GPT-5 labels even as older models, enterprise exceptions, and recent service incidents show how much of the old system is still being managed behind the scenes.
