Art Paris Fair Celebrates 25th Anniversary

The Art Paris fair is celebrating its 25th anniversary at the Grand Palais. The event anchors the city's role as a major hub for contemporary art and design, providing a key source of creative inspiration for local fashion and design professionals.

Under the direction of Guillaume Piens since 2012, Art Paris has carved out a distinct identity as a fair focused on discovery. The 25th-anniversary edition brought together 134 galleries from 25 countries at the Grand Palais Éphémère. The fair deliberately maintains a strong French and European core, with an exhibitor ratio of 60% domestic to 40% international galleries. The 2023 edition was structured around two key themes: "Art & Commitment" and "Exile: Dispossession and Resistance." Curator Marc Donnadieu focused on the French scene, selecting 20 artists exploring commitment, while curator Amanda Abi Khalil presented a selection of 18 international artists addressing the complexities of exile. A dedicated section called "Promises" supports emerging art, showcasing nine galleries that have been in existence for less than six years. This focus on new talent is a core part of the fair's strategy, with the 2023 edition featuring a 33% gallery renewal rate to ensure a fresh perspective. Since 2022, Art Paris has pioneered an eco-design approach, becoming the first art fair to implement a sustainable organization based on a life-cycle analysis. This initiative led to a 45.8% reduction in waste produced between the 2021 and 2022 editions. Established in 1999, Art Paris began as an "off" fair to the more established FIAC. Over two decades, it has established itself as the city's premier springtime art event, differentiating itself from the autumn calendar now anchored by Paris+ par Art Basel. Looking ahead, the fair continues its thematic explorations. The 2024 edition will feature "Fragile Utopias," a look at the French scene curated by Éric de Chassey, and "Art & Craft," curated by Nicolas Trembley, examining how contemporary artists engage with artisanal savoir-faire.
