21-Year-Old Cobolli Upsets Tiafoe for First Title

Italian Flavio Cobolli claimed his first career ATP title at the Mexican Open, defeating Frances Tiafoe 7-6(5), 6-3 in straight sets. The 21-year-old delivered a composed performance in the tense first-set tiebreak and broke Tiafoe's serve early in the second to pull away. Tiafoe was appearing in the biggest final of his career but couldn't capitalize on the opportunity.

The victory in Acapulco marks Flavio Cobolli's third ATP Tour title and his first on a hard court. His previous two titles, won in 2025 at the Hamburg Open and the Tiriac Open, were both on clay courts. This win is his second at the ATP 500 level. Before the tournament, Cobolli was ranked 20th in the world. The 500 ranking points earned from this victory will propel him to a new career-high of 15th. This win caps a strong turnaround for the 23-year-old, who had a difficult start to the 2026 season, losing four consecutive matches at one point. For Frances Tiafoe, this was his third appearance in an ATP 500 final, and he has yet to win one. The American, ranked 28th coming into the tournament, has now lost eight of the 11 ATP finals he has contested. Despite the loss, his run to the final will see his ranking improve to 22nd. The Mexican Open in Acapulco is a significant stop on the ATP Tour as an ATP 500 series event. Formerly played on clay, the tournament switched to hard courts in 2014, making it a key lead-up event to the "Sunshine Double" in Indian Wells and Miami. Past champions include tennis greats like Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, and Thomas Muster, who each have won the title four times.
