Sonoma County Wineries Host Barrel Tasting
A major barrel tasting event is happening this weekend across Northern Sonoma County, with 50 wineries participating. While geared toward adults, the event offers an opportunity for a family-friendly day trip, as many wineries feature outdoor spaces, food trucks, and picnic areas.
This weekend's barrel tasting is the 48th annual event of its kind, a tradition started in 1977 by just nine wineries to attract visitors during a typically slower month. Now, this popular event, organized by Wine Road Northern Sonoma County, involves 50 wineries and draws both serious wine connoisseurs and those new to wine tasting. For a weekend ticket price of $50, attendees have the opportunity to taste wines directly from the barrel, giving them a preview of future vintages before they are bottled. This unique experience allows visitors to meet and chat with the winemakers in the cellar, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the winemaking process that isn't typically available to the public. The self-guided tours span across the Alexander, Dry Creek, and Russian River valleys, allowing ticket holders to choose their own path through Sonoma's scenic wine country. In addition to sampling "futures," many wineries will also be pouring their current releases and, in some cases, offering rare library wines from past vintages. While this specific barrel tasting event is for adults 21 and over, many Sonoma County wineries offer family-friendly environments on other occasions. Wineries such as Dry Creek Vineyard have been known to host "family affair" barrel tastings, though their participation in this specific weekend's event is not confirmed. For those planning a future family trip, it's worth noting that the region is known for wineries with picnic areas and open spaces welcoming to all ages.
