Mistral AI Acquires Koyeb to Build Cloud Infrastructure

French foundation model company Mistral AI has acquired Paris-based startup Koyeb in its first-ever acquisition. The move signals Mistral's intent to build its own cloud infrastructure to deliver its open-source language models to enterprise clients, a strategy to better manage the complex needs of real-time and embodied AI applications.

- The acquisition will integrate Koyeb's entire 13-person team, including its three co-founders, into Mistral AI's engineering division to work on "Mistral Compute," the company's AI infrastructure offering. - Koyeb specializes in a serverless platform that allows developers to deploy and scale applications globally without managing the underlying infrastructure, a key technology for running AI applications, APIs, and inference models efficiently. This is designed to reduce operational complexity and deployment times. - This move is part of Mistral's broader strategy of vertical integration, aiming to control the full AI stack from models down to the data centers. This follows a recent €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion) investment in new data centers in Sweden to reduce reliance on U.S. cloud providers and ensure data sovereignty for European clients. - The founders of Koyeb, Yann Leger (CEO), Edouard Bonlieu (CPO), and Bastien Chatelard (CTO), previously founded and worked at Scaleway, a major European cloud service provider, giving them deep experience in building cloud infrastructure. - Koyeb's platform is built to run on bare metal servers across multiple locations and is designed to handle the "bursty" patterns of AI inference workloads, making it a strategic fit for optimizing GPU usage. - The acquisition sharpens Mistral AI's competitive edge against other major AI players like OpenAI and Anthropic by bundling its open-source models with its own deployment and inference infrastructure. - Prior to the acquisition, Koyeb had raised a total of $8.64 million in funding, including a $7 million seed round in November 2023 with investors like Serena, ISAI, and MongoDB. - Mistral AI, founded in 2023 by researchers from DeepMind and Meta, reached a valuation of €11.7 billion (approximately $13.8 billion) by September 2025 and has an annual revenue run rate of over $400 million.
