CNN Reportedly Sold to MAGA Ally
A media industry analysis suggests that CNN has been acquired by an individual or group aligned with the "MAGA" political movement, sparking concerns about the future of the network's journalistic independence. The report also pointed to significant disruptions at CBS. The development has intensified a debate over media consolidation and the potential for increased politicization of mainstream news organizations.
The winning bid for CNN's parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, came from Paramount Skydance, a company controlled by billionaire Larry Ellison and his son David, who are described as allies of Donald Trump. This development concluded a bidding war with Netflix, which withdrew its offer after Paramount Skydance increased its bid. The deal is valued at $31 per share and will merge the Warner Bros. studio, HBO, and networks like CNN, TNT, and TBS with Paramount's assets, which include CBS. Netflix's offer had sought only the streaming service and film studio, which would have spun off CNN into a separate entity. Concerns within CNN are focused on the potential leadership of Bari Weiss, a Substack writer who currently heads CBS News, and the possibility of significant editorial shifts. Staffers at both CNN and CBS have expressed fears of major job cuts due to the consolidation of the two news organizations. The acquisition is not yet finalized as it must undergo a regulatory review by the Department of Justice's antitrust division. The deal could also face legal challenges from state attorneys general, meaning the finalization of the merger and any subsequent changes at CNN could be a lengthy process.
