Russia Aiding Iran with US Intel

The shared intelligence reportedly includes specific locations of American warships and aircraft in the Middle East. One U.S. official described the information sharing as a "pretty comprehensive effort," marking the first known instance of a major American adversary indirectly participating in the conflict. This cooperation follows a January 2025 "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" agreement signed by Moscow and Tehran, which includes provisions for countering shared threats. While the pact stops short of a mutual-defense clause, it solidifies a deepening military and economic relationship. The United States currently has between 40,000 and 50,000 military personnel stationed across roughly 10 countries in the region. Key assets include the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest US base in the region, and the Navy's Fifth Fleet, headquartered in Bahrain. The intelligence sharing is seen as a significant escalation of the two countries' military partnership, which has grown since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Iran has been a key military supplier to Russia, providing Shahed attack drones and technology for a drone manufacturing facility inside Russia. In return for its support in Ukraine, Russia can provide Iran with sophisticated intelligence capabilities that Tehran lacks. Russia operates an advanced network of intelligence satellites and surveillance platforms, which can identify vulnerable U.S. assets that Iran's smaller number of military satellites cannot track effectively. The White House has publicly downplayed the impact of this Russian assistance. A spokesperson stated the intelligence sharing "clearly is not making a difference with respect to the military operations in Iran, because we are completely decimating them."
