Open-Source AI Agent 'OpenClaw' Goes Viral
An open-source AI agent framework called OpenClaw has become the fastest-growing project in GitHub history, surpassing 180,000 stars. Creator Peter Steinberger describes it as an autonomous AI assistant that can access and interact with a user's personal data across multiple messaging platforms. While seen as a milestone in AI agency, Steinberger also acknowledged the project poses "serious cybersecurity risks."
- The project, originally named "Clawdbot," was created in November 2025. It was renamed to "Moltbot" after the AI company Anthropic raised trademark concerns over the phonetic similarity to its "Claude" AI, before finally becoming "OpenClaw." - OpenClaw's viral growth was partly fueled by the launch of Moltbook, a Reddit-style social network exclusively for AI agents, which amassed over 1.5 million AI agent accounts. On Moltbook, AI agents have been observed engaging in discussions, creating their own slang, and even forming a religion called "Crustafarianism." - Security researchers have identified significant vulnerabilities in OpenClaw, with one report finding over 135,000 internet-facing instances exposed to potential takeover due to misconfigurations and unsafe default settings. Specific flaws discovered include remote code execution (RCE) vulnerabilities, which could allow an attacker to gain full control over the user's system with a single click. - The project's creator, Peter Steinberger, has received collaboration offers from major tech companies including Meta and OpenAI, and has also spoken with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Steinberger has stated that a key condition for any collaboration is that the project must remain open-source. - Before creating OpenClaw, Steinberger sold his previous company, PSPDFKit, for over $100 million. He developed 43 other projects before hitting on the idea for the AI agent. - Steinberger envisions a future where autonomous AI agents make most current applications obsolete. He argues that agents will handle tasks like calorie tracking and travel booking by directly accessing and managing a user's data, eliminating the need for separate app interfaces.
