Battlefield 6 Wins Big
Battlefield 6 was crowned Game of the Year and Best PC Game at the UKIE Video Game Awards 2026. The title sold over seven million units in three days, making it the franchise's most successful launch and 2025's best-selling US title.
The award for Guildford-based developer Criterion Games marks a significant turnaround for the Battlefield franchise. The success of *Battlefield 6* was seen as a crucial course correction after the troubled launch and poor reception of its predecessor, 2021's *Battlefield 2042*. That entry was criticized for its futuristic setting, controversial "Specialist" system, and numerous technical issues at launch. Development of *Battlefield 6* was a massive undertaking, with a reported budget exceeding $400 million. The game was developed by a collective of EA-owned studios under the "Battlefield Studios" banner, with Criterion Games playing a key role. This focus on the first-person shooter franchise led to the decision to put the *Need for Speed* series, another of Criterion's well-known titles, on hold. *Battlefield 6* represented a deliberate return to the modern military setting of fan-favorite entries like *Battlefield 3* and *Battlefield 4*. Key changes from its predecessor included the reintroduction of the classic four-class system (Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon) and a new "Kinesthetic Combat System" designed to enhance player movement and interaction with the environment. The game also featured a full single-player campaign, a component that was absent from *Battlefield 2042*. The game's launch on October 10, 2025, was met with a massive player response. It peaked at over 747,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, shattering previous records for the franchise. In its opening weekend, players logged over 172 million matches and more than 15 million hours of gameplay were streamed. Critically, the game received a "Generally Favorable" rating, with an average score of 84/100 on Metacritic. While the multiplayer component was widely praised as a return to form, the single-player campaign received a more mixed reception. Some players on platforms like Steam expressed frustration with technical issues and balancing, leading to a more divided user score. Following its successful launch, EA outlined a plan for a robust first season of free post-launch content, including new maps like "Blackwell Fields" and "Eastwood," and new game modes such as the 4v4 "Strikepoint" and 8v8 "Sabotage." This commitment to ongoing, free content was a key part of the strategy to maintain player engagement. By December 2025, it was estimated that *Battlefield 6* had sold over 20 million copies. However, by January 2026, the concurrent player count on Steam had dropped significantly from its launch peak, a trend that is not uncommon for major online multiplayer releases but still a point of discussion among the game's community. The UKIE Video Game Awards also recognized other titles, with Rebellion's *Atomfall* winning Best UK Console Game and FuturLab's *PowerWash Simulator* taking home the award for Best UK Mobile Game. The awards ceremony celebrated the breadth of talent within the UK's video game development scene.
