Air Congo is adding Kinshasa–Johannesburg service, giving travelers between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Africa a new same-airline option on the route. (aeroroutes.com) Schedule filings show the airline plans three weekly flights from Kinshasa to Johannesburg via Lubumbashi on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, using a Boeing 737-800. The timetable listed by AeroRoutes shows departures from Kinshasa at 08:00 and arrivals in Johannesburg at 15:20, with the return leaving Johannesburg at 16:30. (aeroroutes.com) Air Congo is the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s national carrier, created in a partnership between the Congolese government and Ethiopian Airlines. Ethiopian said in December 2024 that the venture would launch Air Congo with the government holding 51% and Ethiopian 49%. (corporate.ethiopianairlines.com) The Johannesburg route is part of a wider regional push. AeroRoutes reported in February that Air Congo’s northern summer 2026 plan also included Cotonou, Dar es Salaam, Douala and Entebbe, while Ecofin Agency said the airline was aiming for up to 14 regional routes. (aeroroutes.com) (ecofinagency.com) Johannesburg is a significant gateway for that strategy. Airports Company South Africa says O.R. Tambo International is Africa’s biggest and busiest airport, handling more than 21 million passengers a year. (airports.co.za) Air Congo began operations on December 1, 2024, and Ethiopian’s ShebaMiles partner page says it has been building from a Kinshasa hub with Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The airline’s own website says international destinations including Johannesburg were in development after its domestic launch. (shebamiles.ethiopianairlines.com) (air-congo.com) The new service also enters a market that already has nonstop competition. FlightConnections listed three airlines with direct Kinshasa–Johannesburg service as of April 17, including South African Airways, ASKY Airlines and Air Côte d’Ivoire. (flightconnections.com) For travelers, the practical change is simple: more seats and another booking option between Kinshasa and Johannesburg as Air Congo tries to turn a young domestic carrier into a regional one.
