Wildflower 'Superbloom' Near Peak in California

California's wildflower boom is near a once-in-a-decade peak, with Death Valley seeing the best display since 2016. While not officially a superbloom, wildflowers are carpeting the desert floor; park officials warn the blooms are short-lived.

Death Valley is currently experiencing its best wildflower bloom since 2016, with vibrant displays of desert gold and other species. The park is not officially calling it a "superbloom," though some reports indicate it is above-average to "Superbloom" levels. "Superbloom" lacks a strict scientific definition, but generally refers to an exceptional simultaneous blossoming of wildflowers. These events typically occur in California and Arizona deserts after unusually wet rainy seasons, roughly once a decade. The ideal superbloom conditions include well-spaced rainfall from fall through spring, moderate temperatures, and minimal wind. The recent wet conditions in the American West have created carpets of desert gold, brown-eyed primrose, lupine, and verbena. The blooms are expected to last from mid-February to mid-April at lower elevations, shifting to higher elevations from April to June. Prime viewing spots include North and South Badwater Road, Highway 190, and Beatty Cutoff. Park officials urge visitors to stay on marked trails to protect the delicate wildflowers and avoid damaging the ecosystem. Trampling flowers hinders future blooms. Entrance to Death Valley National Park costs $30 per vehicle, valid for 7 days. As of 2026, the park is cashless, accepting debit/credit cards or digital payments only. An "America the Beautiful" pass, priced at $80 for U.S. residents, grants access to multiple national parks. Visitation is high during peak bloom; expect crowds and limited parking. Consider visiting the Furnace Creek Visitor Center for planning your trip.
