Claude for Word Launched
Anthropic released 'Claude for Word', a version of Claude that preserves formatting, supports tracked changes, pulls data directly from Excel and processes documents locally so data doesn't leave the device. (x.com) The company also published a set of 'Claude Skills' mapped to compliance frameworks including ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR and HIPAA to support governance and risk workflows. (x.com)
Anthropic has launched Claude for Word in beta, putting its assistant directly inside Microsoft Word for Team and Enterprise customers. (claude.com) The add-in edits text as native tracked changes, replies inside Word comment threads, and preserves heading styles, numbering schemes, bullet formatting, and defined terms instead of pasting plain text into a document. (claude.com) Anthropic says the tool can carry context across its Word, Excel, and PowerPoint add-ins in one conversation, and its product examples include drafting a thesis section from numbers in an attached 10-K filing. Anthropic’s Microsoft partnership page separately says Claude can build and edit spreadsheets directly in Excel through Microsoft 365 Copilot’s Agent Mode preview. (claude.com) (anthropic.com) The release targets a stubborn office-software problem: most chatbots work in a separate window, while contracts, memos, and board materials live inside formatted files where a broken cross-reference or renumbered clause can create cleanup work. Anthropic’s Word page says Claude can flag inconsistent defined terms, broken cross-references, and numbering errors across a full document. (claude.com) Anthropic is also tying the product to compliance-heavy buyers. Its Trust Center lists support materials and certifications across frameworks including System and Organization Controls 2 Type 2, International Organization for Standardization 27001:2022, International Organization for Standardization 42001:2023, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act reporting for Claude for Enterprise and the Anthropic application programming interface. (trust.anthropic.com) That compliance push extends to Skills, Anthropic’s reusable workflow templates. Anthropic’s Skills announcement says the company provides built-in skills for Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and fillable Portable Document Format files, while teams can package their own repeatable workflows for broader use. (anthropic.com) (claude.com) Anthropic’s public materials for Claude for Word stop short of promising that no data ever leaves a device. The product page says the add-in “works within your existing security framework,” and Anthropic’s Microsoft 365 connector guide describes an Anthropic-hosted integration that retrieves data on demand rather than a fully local system. (claude.com) (support.claude.com) The launch also deepens Anthropic’s ties to Microsoft’s workplace stack. Anthropic said on November 18, 2025 that Claude models became available in Microsoft Foundry public preview and that Claude already powered the Researcher agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot and custom agents in Copilot Studio. (anthropic.com) For legal, finance, and compliance teams, the pitch is narrower than “write with artificial intelligence.” It is that a model can now revise the document people actually sign, keep the markup visible, and fit inside procurement and audit processes those teams already use.
