Canadian MLS Clubs Sweep Weekend

All major Canadian MLS teams — Whitecaps, Toronto FC, and CF Montréal secured away wins in a rare collective performance signaling growing competitiveness. The success comes as mounting injuries plague the Canadian Men's National Team, particularly affecting defenders ahead of international fixtures.

The Vancouver Whitecaps led the charge with a dominant 4-1 victory over the Portland Timbers, marking a successful start to their Cascadia Cup title defense. Brian White netted a brace for Vancouver, while Sebastian Berhalter contributed a goal and an assist in the comprehensive road win. Toronto FC secured their first win of the 2026 season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against FC Cincinnati at TQL Stadium. Dániel Sallói's 86th-minute goal, his first for the club, was the decisive moment, giving Toronto its first-ever goal and win at that venue. CF Montréal, after starting the season with two losses and no goals scored, stunned the previously unbeaten New York Red Bulls with a 3-0 win on the road. Midfielder Wiki Carmona, acquired in an offseason trade from the Red Bulls, scored two goals against his former team and was named the MLS Player of the Matchday. This impressive sweep on the road provides a bright spot amidst growing concerns for the Canadian Men's National Team. The national squad is facing a significant injury crisis, particularly on defense, ahead of upcoming international friendlies. The list of injured Canadian defenders is extensive and includes key players like Alphonso Davies (hamstring), Moïse Bombito (broken leg), Derek Cornelius (hamstring), and Alistair Johnston (hamstring). Luc de Fougerolles recently suffered an ankle injury, adding to the defensive woes. Long-term absentee Sam Adekugbe is also recovering from an Achilles injury. These injuries come at a critical time as the national team prepares for a series of friendly matches. Canada is scheduled to play Iceland on March 28 and Tunisia on March 31, both at BMO Field in Toronto. These matches are part of the team's preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
