Cord Blood Banking Market to Reach $49.85B

The global market for cord blood banking services is projected to be a $49.85 billion opportunity by 2031, driven by advancements in stem cell applications and regenerative medicine. North America currently leads the market, holding a 39.54% share in 2025.

The first successful cord blood transplant was performed in 1988 to treat a six-year-old boy with Fanconi Anemia, a rare genetic disease. The stem cells were sourced from his newborn sister's umbilical cord, proving the viability of what was once considered medical waste. Following this success, two distinct banking models emerged in the early 1990s: public banks and private banks. Public banks accept donations to be used by any matching person in need, while private banks charge fees to store cord blood for the exclusive use of the donor and their family. Globally, more than 40,000 cord blood transplants have been performed. The worldwide inventory consists of approximately 800,000 units in public banks and over 8.1 million stored in private family banks. Stem cells from cord blood are used to treat more than 80 diseases, including cancers, blood disorders like sickle cell anemia, and some immune and metabolic disorders. Cord blood transplants can be advantageous, as they don't require a perfect genetic match and may have a lower risk of graft-versus-host disease compared to bone marrow transplants. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates cord blood banks. The Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005 authorized federal funding to create a National Cord Blood Inventory, increasing the supply of high-quality, genetically diverse units available for public use. Hundreds of clinical trials are underway to explore the use of cord blood in regenerative medicine. These studies are investigating potential treatments for conditions such as cerebral palsy, type 1 diabetes, and spinal cord injury.
