BLM Considers E-Bike Trail Access

The Bureau of Land Management is considering allowing e-bikes on over 200 miles of mountain bike trails in Colorado's Roaring Fork and Eagle valleys. The proposal could significantly expand trail options for e-bike users but is likely to spark debate among hikers, bikers, and land managers about trail sharing and conservation.

- The proposal by the Bureau of Land Management's Colorado River Valley Field Office would open up more than 200 miles of single-track mountain bike trails to Class 1 e-bikes; currently, only about 18 miles are accessible to them within this office's jurisdiction. - This initiative specifically applies to Class 1 e-bikes, which are defined as having a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and cuts off when the bike reaches 20 miles per hour. - The potential change in rules was prompted by requests from local mountain bike groups in January 2024, which led the BLM to conduct surveys and monitor visitor use before moving forward with an environmental assessment. - Concerns raised by local officials, such as those in Carbondale, focus on the potential for trail degradation from increased use, conflicts between different types of users on narrow trails, and the challenge of enforcing e-bike regulations. - The public has until March 25, 2026, to submit comments on the proposal, and the BLM has scheduled public meetings in Eagle and Silt to gather more input. - After the public comment period, the BLM will conduct an environmental assessment and follow the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process before making a final decision. - Trail systems that could be affected by this decision are managed in cooperation with several local governments, including Eagle County, Pitkin County, Carbondale, and Glenwood Springs. - This local proposal falls under a broader 2020 BLM national rule that gives local land managers the authority to permit e-bikes on non-motorized trails after completing required environmental reviews and public input processes.
