IndiGo Extends Middle East Flight Waivers

IndiGo issued a travel advisory extending free cancellation waivers to/from Middle East and Istanbul until March 31, 2026, due to regional volatility. The airline's advisory comes as Yahoo Life highlighted overtourism fees and heat disruptions worsening conditions at popular European destinations.

The current volatility in the Middle East stems from a conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran that began around February 28, 2026. This has led to significant airspace restrictions and widespread flight disruptions across the region. The disruption has been extensive, with over 27,000 flights to Middle Eastern hubs canceled since the conflict began. IndiGo alone canceled over 500 flights to the Middle East and other international destinations between February 28 and March 3. Other major carriers, including Air India, Emirates, and Etihad Airways, have also suspended or reduced flights, issuing their own travel waivers and rebooking options for affected passengers. U.S. airlines like United and American Airlines have also canceled services and offered waivers for destinations such as Dubai, Tel Aviv, and Amman. Meanwhile, European travel faces its own set of challenges, with several destinations introducing or increasing tourist taxes to combat overtourism. In Barcelona, the nightly hotel tax has nearly doubled, potentially adding over €45 to a typical two-night stay for a couple. Edinburgh is also set to introduce a 5% levy on overnight accommodations in 2026. These fees are part of a broader trend across more than 100 European cities aiming to manage visitor numbers and fund local infrastructure. Compounding the issue, extreme heat is altering traditional European travel seasons. Increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves are causing disruptions, leading to recommendations against outdoor activities during peak hours and even the temporary closure of attractions. Climate data indicates that Europe has already surpassed the 1.5°C warming threshold, making such weather events more common.
